Bane is a supervillain who is best known as an adversary of Batman in DC Comics. He first appeared in *Batman: Vengeance of Bane* #1 (January 1993).
Born in the Peña Duro prison on Santa Prisca, Bane spent his childhood incarcerated, developing exceptional strength and intellect. He was subjected to experiments involving Venom, a strength-enhancing drug.
Mastering Venom, Bane escaped Peña Duro and set his sights on Gotham City. In a calculated move, he strategically weakened Batman by releasing the inmates of Arkham Asylum before confronting and famously breaking Batman's back.
Though initially a formidable foe, Bane's dependence on Venom has often been portrayed as a weakness, making him vulnerable when cut off from the drug.
